The thing that made me list this ladder here is its tool tray. What I like most about this tool tray is that it has a magnet inside. That means that if all your slots are filled then you can still place small tools on top of the plastic tray.

On top of that, the tool tray helps you a lot, especially when cutting hedges. You don’t have to drop down to pick another tool, you can just pick it from the tool tray. The tool tray is located at the top of the ladder.

It is a 10-foot ladder — if you have very high hedges then this one isn’t the best choice, but for small and medium height, this ladder is very good. It’s made of fiberglass and it has a weight capacity of 300 lbs.

Moreover, the ladder can be converted into two different shapes — converts into a step ladder and shelf ladder.  The step ladder is designed in a way that gets you closer to the hedges.

On the downside, the ladder could be heavy for some people. Approximately weighs 39 pounds.

Pros:

  • Tool Tray – Located at the top of ladders, allows you to store your tools.
  • Durable – Made of fiberglass.
  • Capacity – The maximum weight capacity is 300 lbs.
  • Converts – You can convert it into two different ladders.
  • Closer – The step ladder is designed to bring you closer to the surface.

Cons:

  • It can be heavy for some people

Although most of the hedges are soft and not very durable, some hedges that are strong enough to allow you to put the ladder on them.

And if you have some of them in your garden then I recommend you check out the Finether 15.4ft Telescoping Ladder. As you may have guessed from the name, it’s 15-feet tall.

What makes this ladder special is that it’s very portable, when it’s fully closed it’s only 4-feet tall. This is helpful if you don’t have a lot of space to store the tool.

On top of that, the ladder is adjustable — you can transform it into different shapes, you can use it as a single-ladder, double-side ladder, stair ladder, etc. This makes this tool very versatile. The maximum weight capacity is 330 lbs

On the downside, this ladder comes with low-quality aluminum mats that can easily bend.

Pros:

  • Height – 15.4 feet high.
  • Portable – When it’s fully closed it’s only 4-feet tall.
  • Adjustable – You can convert it into different ladders.
  • Maximum Weight Capacity – 330 lbs.

  • Low-Quality Aluminum Mats

Best Ladders for Pruning Trees — Buyers Guide

Buying a ladder is a good investment. If you buy the right ladder it will help you complete all the tasks at a “height”. But, if you buy the wrong one, then it can lead to some serious damages.

You have a lot of trees in your garden. They are very tall so in order to reach them, you need to use a ladder. Since a lot of models are available, choosing just one is hard. But you can check our best ladders for pruning trees list where we reviewed 5 different ladders and explained their qualities.

That’s why, when buying a ladder you need to know which qualities you need and which you don’t. We have tried out best to explain to you the qualities that the ladders we listed have.

To help you find the right ladder we have made a buyer guide where we listed all the qualities you need to focus on.

Ladder Type

The ladder-type depends on your garden. Depending on how high the hedges are, and how much space you have in your garden you can choose one ladder or the other.

If you have a very small garden, then buying a high and big ladder isn’t the best idea. Or, if you have a big garden then buying a small ladder will just make the process harder. That’s why it all depends on your garden.

Adjustable Legs

Having a ladder with adjustable legs is necessary. As you know, hedges are bound to have different height and positions.

Plus, a lot of people make a platform around hedges which makes it harder for you to access the hedges. If your ladder doesn’t have adjustable legs then you will face a lot of problems. You should be able to adjust the front rails and the back rails to match it with the place you are working on.

Height

If you have a 10-foot hedge, neither is a 5-foot or a 20-foot going to help you. The first one is too small, and the second one is too high.  You won’t be able to cut the hedges with these ladders.

When buying a ladder for hedges it is important to buy a ladder who is one or two inches higher than your tallest hedge.  You can buy a higher ladder only if it’s an adjustable one, and you can adjust it to match the height of the hedges.

Leg Support

Not everyone has a flat garden, most of the surface around the hedges isn’t flat. Unless you have something on the ground, the surface will be very soft. Soft surfaces are not very stable, and a simple move can easily shake the whole ladder.

To work around these surfaces you need to have some ladder leg support such as extra rails, long stabilizers, etc.

Step Size

The steps should be extra wide. A hedge takes a lot of space, and sometimes it can cover the whole ladder. Even though this isn’t very recommended, you should have some space to move your feet while working.

The steps should be wide at the center, so you can move your feet inside the ladder and not outside. Keep in mind, only move your feet if you are uncomfortable and can’t work.

Body Support

Some hedges are very close and some are far away. If you feel that the hedge is close to you, then most likely you will attempt to reach the hedge from the position you are without going down and moving the ladder position.

A ladder should come with body support to protect you from slipping. If your ladder doesn’t have body support, then it’s recommended to move the ladder into a position where you can reach the hedge without leaning your body.

Tools Tray

Although this isn’t very necessary, it’s still good to have it if you can. Most of the time the tool tray is located at the top of the ladder, above the highest step. These trays come with slots where you can put your tools.

This is helpful if you are working with different tools. Instead of going down and picking the tool that you need, you can just pick it from the tool tray without having to go down. This helps you save a lot of time and energy.

Why should you use specialized ladders for cutting hedges?

Specialized ladders are needed for cutting hedges because of the surface underneath the hedges. Most of the time, the surface is very soft so having a simple ladder won’t do it.

Basic ladders are good, but not good enough for cutting hedges. You need special ladders that come with a lot of features to deal with hedges.

You need a ladder that comes with leg support, that is adjustable and stable. Except for these reasons, here are some more reasons:

Height Adjust-ability

Hedges come on different height, some are very a few inches high and some are a few feet high. Most of the basic ladders don’t have enough height to reach hedges, or they are very high so you can work comfortably.

The hedge-cutting ladders come with adjustable options. That means that you can make the ladder shorter or taller depending on your hedge height. Plus. you may have different hedges, some of them can be very high and some of them not, with a basic ladder you can cut all of them.

Accessibility

Most of the time, people tend to make a platform around hedges. A ladder is a big unit, sometimes you don’t have enough space to put both of the ladder legs on the ground. A hedge-cutting ladder comes with adjustable legs that allow you to adjust the whole shape of the ladder.

Safety

Usually, cheap and basic ladder are made from low-quality material. These ladders tend to bend a lot or even break. A hedge-cutting ladder usually comes with a high-quality material such as air-grade aluminum or fiberglass.

The material is very important because it gives the ladder a longer life, plus it makes the ladder more stable. And a stable ladder means that you will work comfortably.

Final Words

We have tried our best to give you all the information you need to choose a hedge-cutting ladder.  In our best ladders for pruning trees list, we have 5 different ladders that come with different qualities. Depending on your garden and needs, you can choose one or the other.

If you don’t know which one to choose then read our buyer guide or just pick one from the list.
