Different Types of Ladders for Painting Tasks

There are different types of ladders that you can use of painting projects. Each of them offers you different qualities that can be useful for different scenarios.

Step Ladders

These types of ladders are mostly used for indoors — they are not too big but they are high enough to help you reach the ceilings of your rooms.

They offer the A-Frame which gives you more space to work with.

Extension Ladder/ Telescoping Ladder

These types of ladders are good if you are working outdoors — if you plan on painting your house then this should be a perfect choice for you.

What makes these ladders special is that you can extend them up to 60 ft. The downside is that you need to lean them against a wall.

Platform Ladders

These offer the same qualities as the step ladders but they are higher. So if you are working outdoors and need ladders that offer you the A-Frame shape then the platform ladders should be your first choice.

The downside is that they are not very portable. They are fold-able but you can’t adjust their height so storing them can be a problem if you don’t have a lot of space.

Best Ladders For Painting

1. Flip-N-Lite – Best Painters Step Ladder

Best Features  Little Giant Ladder Systems Flip N Lite 6 Foot 300 Pound Capacity Aluminum Lightweight Slim...

  • Lightweight
  • Portable
  • Has a base at the top

More detailed review ↴

When I have to paint I mostly use this Flip-N-Lite Ladder because of its design. The thing that makes me use this ladder is the base.

This ladder comes with a base at the top — you can use this base to put your feet if you have to reach a higher surface or you can use it to put your tools. I mostly use it to put my paint bucket while painting, extremely helpful.

Except for that, this unit is lightweight, it only weighs 14 pounds. This ladder holds up to 300 lbs, which can be too little in some situations.

The ladder is 6 ft high — it’s more than enough for most of the painting jobs. It’s mostly used by homeowners but it can be used for industrial jobs as well.

It comes with a specific design that allows you to open the ladder with one hand, and once you are done the ladder fully folds. This makes this ladder very portable and it’s perfect if you have limited storage space.

Pros:

  • Base – It comes with a base where you can put your tools.
  • Lightweight – The unit only weighs 14 pounds.
  • Design – Allows you to open the ladder with one hand.
  • Portable – Easy to transport and it doesn’t take a lot of space when storing.

Cons:

  •  Low-maximum weight (300lbs).

2. Louisville Ladder L-3016-06 – Best Ladder for Interior Painting

Best Features  Louisville Ladder L-3016-06 Step Stepladder, 6-Feet

  • Non-Slip
  • Durable
  • Tools Slots

Another stepladder on our list. What makes stepladders good for painting is their A-frame. That frame gives you more space to work with, plus it’s a traditional frame that everyone knows, and that helps with safety.

There’s no exception on the Louisville ladder — this unit is very durable, it comes with full channel fiberglass which gives the tool a longer life.

What makes this ladder special is its stability. This ladder comes with non-slip treads that allow you to put the ladder at any surface without risking to slip. It also has wide back braces that give the tool maximum stability and strength.

The tool itself is very easy to carry, it weighs 18 pounds. And at the top of the ladder, you have some slots where you can put your tools — I don’t use this feature a lot but it can be helpful to some.

Pros:

  • Durable – Comes with full channel fiberglass.
  • Stable – It has wide back braces that give the tool strength.
  • Non-Slip – Comes with non-slip treads.
  • Lightweight – 18 pounds.

Cons:

  •  Comes with very thick legs.

  • 16 Ft.

Another ladder from Louisville, but this one is an extension painting ladder.  If you are looking for painting a two-story house or a very high surface then I recommend this one.

Exceptions painting ladders can be extended for a greater reach, however, they are limited on what they can do.  Since these types of ladders don’t come with an A-Frame that means that you need to lean them against walls.

Regardless of that, the Louisville Ladder FE3216 comes with great features.  It comes with serrated rungs that useful especially if you are working outdoors, this prevents slippage during wet weather.

To make this tool more stable, it comes with safety metal shoes that give the tool a firmer grip at the ground.  The height of this ladder is 16 feet and it weighs 31 pounds — which is way more than stepladders.

On the downside, the ladder can only hold up to 300 lbs.

Pros:

  • Serrated Rungs – Prevents you to slip while wet weather.
  • Stable – Comes with metal shoes at the bottom.
  • Height – 16 inches.

Cons:

  • Weights more than stepladders (31 pounds).

4. Little Giant 22-Foot Velocity – Best Indoor Painting Ladders

Best Features  Little Giant Ladder Systems, Velocity with Wheels, M22, 22 Ft, Multi-Position Ladder, Aluminum, Type...

  • 5-in-1
  • Vertasile
  • Two People Ladder

My favorite types of ladders are the articulating ladders. These ladders are new to the industry but they are slowly starting to replace the other ladders that are available.

A big reason for that is because they are very adjustable. Meaning that you can transform them into an A-Frame but you can also convert them to an extension ladder.

These types of ladders are very expensive, but they will replace most of your ladders. That being said here is our favorite multi-purpose ladder for painting.

What makes the Little Giant 15422-001 ladder special is the versatility — it can be transformed into A-Frame, 90-degree ladder, etc. This ladder will replace 5 ladders.

This ladder can be used by different people, it also can be used by two people at the same time.

On the downside, this unit is kinda heavy, it weighs approximately 39 pounds which is more than the other units listed above.  But it’s height is 22 ft.

Pros:

  • Multipurpose – It can be transformed into different frames.
  • Versatile – You can use it for every project, plus it can be used by two people at the same time.
  • Can work on stairs
  • Cheap for its quality.

Cons:

  • Heavy – Weighs 39 pounds.

5. WolfWise Aluminum Telescopic – Best Painting Ladders for High Ceilings

Best Features  WolfWise 12.5FT Aluminum Telescoping Ladder, Newly Telescopic Extension Ladder 330lbs Capacity

  • Adjustable
  • Push-to-Close
  • 330 lbs Capacity

More detailed review ↴

Last but not least we have the telescoping ladders. What makes these ladders special is that they are very portable, but at the same time they help you to reach very high areas.

This WolfWise Ladder will catch your eyes because of its design. It comes with a smart-close system that allows each step to close slowly which prevents you from pinching your hand.

It takes 5-8 seconds for the ladder to fully close, you just have to push one button for that to happen. The ladder can extend up to 12.5 ft and it can hold up to 330 lbs.

On the downside, it’s heavy if you compare it to the other ladders here — it weighs approximately 25 pounds.

Pros:

  • Portable – It doesn’t take a lot of space and it’s easy to move around with.
  • Smart Close – Comes with a system that allows each step to close smoothly
  • Height – 12.5ft and it can hold up to 330 lbs.

Cons:

  • Heavy — Weighs 25 approximately 25 pounds.

Best Painting Ladders — Buyers Guide

Most of the ladders come with the same qualities — it’s just some of them are better on specific projects than the others. And finding the ladders that are good for your project is the hardest part.

Painting your room means that you have to paint the ceilings too. To reach the ceilings with your paint roller you have to use a ladder. If you don't have one, then make sure to check our list about the best ladder for interior painting.

To know what qualities you need to focus when buying a ladder for painting then check down below;

Stability

To get better results while painting you need a stable ladder. Imagine this — you are at the top of the ladder and started painting the wall but your ladder keeps moving, will you focus on getting good results or will you focus on the ladder that is moving? Most likely you will focus on the second one.

That’s why having a stable ladder is important, especially while painting. You need to feel at the top of the ladder the same you feel when you are at the ground.

Stable ladders mostly come with metal shoes or even non-slip rubber feet to make the base stronger.

Height

The reason that you buy a ladder is to reach higher areas. One of the first things that you need to check when buying a ladder is the height.  How high you need the ladder to be, depends on you and your project.

If you have to paint a two-story home then you need a higher ladder, but if you just have to paint the walls of your living room then buying a 30ft ladder won’t be necessary. If you don’t know what project you will be working on then I recommend you buy an adjustable ladder.

Our fifth choice is an adjustable ladder — that means that you can extend the ladder based on your needs.

Weight

Painting your house means that you will have to move around a lot. If you have to paint different rooms then every time you paint a room you will have to move the ladder to the next room. If the ladder is heavy then the whole process will become harder than it is. You may need someone else to help you every time you decide to move the ladder and that can be time-consuming.

That’s why when buying a ladder for panting you have to check the weight. Having very light ladders isn’t a good option either — they can easily fall or bend. You have to find a middle ground. Usually, 20-30 pound ladders are the best.

Maximum Capacity

Usually, you have to use different tools when painting drywall, ceilings, or anything else. Most of the time these tools are heavy.

So, when buying a painting ladder you should always check the maximum weight that the ladder can hold. You have always to add the weight of your body and the tools that you are using and see if it extends the limit or not. If it extends then you have to buy another ladder.

Material

Material is probably the most important factor about ladders — it can make or break a ladder.  The material determines the weight and strength of the ladder.

If you choose a low-quality ladder then the chances of the ladder falling or bending are high — so you should always buy a ladder with high-quality material.

I always recommend ladders that are made of aluminum or steel. Ladders made of aluminum don’t weigh a lot and at the same time offer stability and strength. Steel offers more stability and strength but it’s heavier.

Finding a ladder that has both — aluminum and steel is the best combination.

Portability

Most of the ladders take a lot of space — and that’s the main reason why people prefer to rent a ladder instead of buying them. But luckily, there are some ladders that are very portable.

Ladders that are fold-able or the one’s that can close their steps are the best. They don’t take a lot of space and they do the job perfectly.

Final Words

And this is it — this is the list that we made about the best ladders for painting. Each of these units offers you different qualities. Depending on your project — outdoor or indoor, you can choose one or the other.
