Being a lineman is not that easy. It takes a lot of courage to become one. Having a tough job is only natural to start looking for ways to make it easier. Something that I have seen a lot of linemen ( line worker) recommend is using a tool bag.

You don’t need just any tool bag, you need the best lineman tool bag. A tool bag will help you keep your tool organized and focusing only on solving the problem rather than focusing on finding your tools.

Note: Our list also contains one backpack. I have seen some lineman using backpacks and that’s the reason why we included.

A tool bag is used by a lot of workers, but the ones who needed it most are the lineman’s. The main reason for that is because they don’t have the luxury to go up and down every time they need a tool .

If you use a lot of tools then you probably need a big tool bag. The one that has enough space and will fit your needs is the Klein 5144BHB14OS. This tool tote or tool bag however you wanna call it will come in handy especially if you need to carry all your tools in one way, without having to go back and forth.

The Klein Tool Tote has enough space to hold most of your tools, if not all. It comes with a total of 29 pockets. 15 of these pockets are located inside the tool, and the other 14 are located outside.

Note: If the tools you use are very large then this won’t do. It has a lot of space for small tools, but when it comes to very large tools they won’t fit.

As a lineman, you should be focusing on solving the problem and not on protecting the bag from tearing up, and that’s the thing that makes this one special. The Klein Tool Bag is actually one of the best tool bags for line workers and it’s resistant to wear and tear.

The main reason for that is because of its material. This tool bag is constructed with rugged denier polyester, which is a known material for durability.

Pros:

  • 29 Pockets – 15 inside, 14 outside.
  • Durable – Resistant to wear and tear
  • Material – Constructed with rugged denier polyester.
  • 14-inches long
Cons:

  • I don’t like the stitching.

If you need a tool bag that is specially made for lineman’s/electricians then the ToughBuilt Journeyman is the way to go. I like this one because they actually took the time and build a tool bag that will help lineman’s complete the work faster.

My favorite thing about this tool bag is the specially-made pouches. It features 21 roomy pouches, the pockets have enough space for all of your tools, including drills, pliers, knives, and even your phone.

Except for these pouches, it also includes 2 no-snag hidden seam pockets, notebook pockets, adjustable pockets,7 screwdriver loops, etc. The pockets contain a wire-tester and an adjustable flashlight wrap. I told you they build a tool bag that will help lineman’s/electricians.

The tool bag itself is durable. It contains 6-Layer Rugged construction, and on top of that, it also has heavy-duty rivet reinforcement. Making this, a heavy-duty tool bag.

It doesn’t come with a tool belt, but it comes with a shoulder strap plus a Clip Tech Hub. The Clip Tech Hub can be attached to any belt that is 2-inches or smaller.

Pros:

  • 21 Pockets – Enough room to hold drills, knives, your phone.
  • Extra Features – The pockets come with a wire-tester plus a flashlight wrap.
  • Material – 6 Layers Rugged construction and it is reinforced with a heavy-duty rivet.
  • Clip Tech Hub – The hub can be attached to any belt that is 2 inches or smaller.
Cons:

  • It doesn’t come with a handle.

3.  CLC 1529

Best Features  CLC Custom LeatherCraft 1529 16 In. Center Tray Tool Bag, 16 Pocket

  • 16 Pockets
  • Zippered Pocket
  • Plastic Tray

If you are looking for a tool bag that comes with different sized pockets, then you should check the CLC 1529. This tool bag has 16 pockets.

8 of these pockets are located outside and the other 8 are inside the bag. It also comes with 2 main pockets that are located at the sides and a zippered pocket at the back. This is a good choice if you use a lot of tools with a different size ( Hint: most of the lineman’s do).

I usually use the outside and inside pockets to store my smaller tools such as my different size pliers, the main pocket is mostly used to accommodate larger tools.  And I leave my phone, wallet and other things I don’t wanna lose inside the zippered pocket at the back of the tool back.

If you are a person like me, then you want your small tools/parts to be organized so you can find them easier when you need them. This tool bag comes with a plastic tray, this is probably my favorite thing about this tool bag. The plastic tray is located at the center and gives you easier access to the small parts. It can hold somewhere near 50 small parts.  Extremely helpful, at least for me.

When it comes to moving around, you have two options. You can use the extra padded carrying handles or you can use the adjustable shoulder strap. Both of them are comfortable and make the moving process easy.

Pros:

  • 16 Pockets – 8 inside and 8 outside.
  • 2 Main Pockets – Located at the sides of the toolbox, mostly used for larger tools.
  • Zippered Pockets – I mostly leave my phone and wallet here so I don’t lose them.
  • Plastic Tray – Helps you to organize small parts, it is located at the center for easier access.
  • Comes with shoulder straps
Cons:

  • I don’t like the material that this one is made of.

Nothing makes a lineman happier then having a tool bag with a lot of pockets. If you are looking for one that has a lot of pockets then the AmazonBasics Tool Bag is your go-to.

This tool bag comes with 50 pockets. This will mostly benefit lineman’s/electricians who use a lot of tools, plus the pockets come on different sizes so you will be able to store almost any type of tool.

41 of the pockets are located inside, these pockets are protected by a big zipper that is located at the top of the bag when the zipper if off, the tool bag will have an open mouth design at the top. And the other 9 pockets are external pockets. I mostly use these external pockets to store the tools I need so I can have easier and faster access.

It is made of black 600D Oxford cloth and 1680D grey material. It has heavy-duty stitching and they have over-stitched every stress point to make this tool last longer. Except for the 2-strap handle, it also has an adjustable shoulder strap to help for easier carrying.

Pros:

  • 50 Pockets – 41 inside and 9 outside pockets.
  • Protected by a zipper – The pockets inside are protected by a big zipper.
  • Open Mouth Design – When the zipper if off the tool bag transform into an open mouth design
  • Heavy-Duty Stitching
  • Comes with shoulder straps
Cons:

  • The outside pockets are a bit fragile.

And, the last in our list is the Klein Tools 55421-BP. I know this is a backpack and not a tool bag, but I have seen more and more people daily using a backpacks – so it’s worth a shot.

Clearly, this is a tool organizer backpack and not a normal backpack. This one comes with 39 pockets – safe to say that it has enough space for most of your tools. 34 of the pockets are inside the backpack and the other 5 are outside.

It is 18 inches high so it’s easy to store larger tools such as drills, heat guns, meters, etc.  It’s also 14-inches long and 7-inches wide. It is constructed with 1680d ballistic weave to give the backpack a longer life.

Pros:

  • It’s a backpack.

What’s a lineman?

I have heard this question a lot. A lineman is a tradesman who basically maintains electric power lines, telecommunications lines, etc.  They usually work outside and in heights.

What they do is that they perform different tasks on the power lines, which include installing or replacing capacitor banks, insulators, and other distribution equipment. Most of these tasks are dangerous, that’s why the lineman must be isolated from the ground.

They also wear special clothes that are connected to a power line, which allows the lineman to work on the wire because it has the same potential as the line. But still, the lineman can get electrocuted if they do an electrical circuit.

That’s why to become a lineman you need to complete a 4-year training. If you are interested in becoming one then check these two training –Southeast Lineman Training Center and Northwest Lineman College

The ones who install the power wiring inside a building are called electricians. There’s a huge confusion between these two jobs.

Why do lineman’s need a tool bag?

Lineman’s work outside and mostly in heights. Climbing a tree takes a lot of time and energy, once they climb they can’t go up and down every time they need a tool. That’s why lineman’s use tool bags.

They usually store all the tools they ever need inside a tool bag or backpack and once they climb they take only the tools they need at that very moment and use it. Once they are done they put the tool back at its own place and pick another if it’s needed.

The tool bag is easy to carry, most of them have shoulder straps and they have enough space for all of your tools. I don’t think a lineman can complete a project without a tool bag unless the project is small and they only need one tool to fix it. If you are thinking of becoming a lineman then a tool bag is needed.

You don’t need just a tool bag, you need a good and durable one. You should be focusing on solving the problem and not focusing if your tool bag will get ripped or not. That’s the main reason why we have made a list of the best lineman tool bags.

How to find the best tool bag for a lineman?

Finding the best tool bag for lineman can be hard. You will have to go through a lot of models, features and other things that will confuse you a lot. But knowing what features you need to focus on will make this task a lot of times easier.

Since you are a lineman that means that you will be working on different projects daily, you will have to work with different tools and solve different projects.  That’s why the tool bag needs enough space for most of your tools and be durable.

Material

If you want to know how much a tool bag will last then check the material that the bag is made of. The tool bag should be made from high-quality material. A lineman has to work on weather conditions, which means that the tool bag should be able to withstand any weather.  You will also need to use a lot of sharp tools such as knives, razors, a tool bag needs to have thick and strong edges so the sharp tools don’t get through.

Some of the materials I recommend are nylon, polyester, canvas, and sometimes even leather.

Space

You are buying the tool bag to hold most of your tools, right? Yes, and that’s why you need one that has enough space. The space of the tool bags is usually determined by how many pockets it has. The more pockets the more space .

The rule of thumb is to count all your tools and see if that tool bag has that number of pockets. But sometimes tool bags come with larger pockets that can hold a lot of tools, so that’s a thing you should also check. You can also read our waterproof tool bags review.
