What Are Lacquer Sprayers?

Lacquer sprayers are the same as paint sprayers, the only difference is that lacquer sprayers can spray lacquer paint without leaving bubbles. It is a sticky and hard-to-deal paint,  most of the sprayers can’t deal with it, so it’s good to know the ones that can.

The final step of your painting project is adding lacquer, and it’s the most important step. Lacquer protects and gives the surface a good appearance.

Best Spray Guns For Lacquer

1. Graco Magnum 257025 – Best Lacquer Airless Paint Sprayer

The Graco Magnum 257025 before using it with lacquer paint.

Best Features

  • Hose Adapter
  • Powerful
  • 50 Gallons per Year.

More detailed review ↴

Although airless paint sprayers don’t do well with lacquer paint, there are always exceptions. A very good sprayer that does well with lacquer paint is the Magnum 257025.

What I like most about this sprayer is that it comes with adjustable settings, it allows me to adjust the pressure and the material flow which helps the sprayer to deal with lacquer paint.

The sprayer features a 3/8 HP motor that delivers up to 2800 PSI. It’s fast too, according to the manufacturer it can spray up to 0.24/gallons per minute, we tested it and it actually does. But, the paint quality isn’t very good so we don’t recommend using full speed.

It is compatible with spray tips: 0.009, 0,011, 0.013, 0,015. I suggest using the 0.013 tip for lacquer paint.

Except for these, the sprayer is very easy to use and you can spray up to 50 gallons per year. It comes with a hose adapter that allows you to connect the garden hose to clean the sprayer faster, and a 50ft paint hose to reach difficult corners.

On the downside, the sprayer costs more than the usual paint sprayers, so unless you have a big project, we don’t recommend it buying for small projects.

What We Liked:

  • Powerful –  It features a 3/8 HP motor that delivers 2800 PSI.
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the pressure and material flow speed.
  • Hose Adapter – You can connect a garden hose or paint hose.
  • Durable – You can spray up to 50 gallons per year.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • If not careful you can overspray

2. Wagner Spraytech 0518080 – Best HVLP Spray Gun for Lacquer

Best Features  Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP Paint or Stain Sprayer, Complete Adjustability for...

  • HVLP
  • Two-Stage Motor
  • Three Air caps

More detailed review ↴

When it comes to HVLP paint sprayers, I always recommend using Wagner 0518080 for many reasons.

One of the reasons why I recommend using this sprayer is because of its body. It comes with a stationary body which means that the weight of the paint and motor stays on the ground and you only have to carry a lightweight spray gun.

One of the best things about this sprayer is that is very good with woodworking projects, so if you have to spray your furniture or cabinets then I suggest using this one, the two-stage motor helps a lot when dealing with lacquer paint.

Just like our first pick, this one too is adjustable. You can adjust the pressure and material flow speed to get the perfect finish, you can also change the air cap to horizontal, vertical, and round.

The spray gun and the stationary body are connected with a 20ft. Paint hose that allows you to move freely without having to move the whole sprayer. And it comes with a 1qt. paint cup.

On the downside, I find this sprayer very hard to clean, it always makes a huge mess, and the paint container doesn’t have a large entering, so you need a brush to clean the insides.

What We Liked:

  • Powerful – It features a two-stage motor.
  • Design – Comes with a stationary body that keeps the weight on the ground.
  • Adjustable – This allows you to adjust the pressure and material flow speed.
  • Hose – Comes with a 20ft paint hose.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Hard to clean

3. Wagner 0529021 FLEXiO 890 – Best Lacquer Spray Guns

Best Features  Wagner 0529021 FLEXiO 890 Stationary HVLP Paint Sprayer, Sprays Unthinned Latex, Includes two...

  • Stationary Body
  • HVLP
  • iSpray Nozzle

More detailed review ↴

Another good HVLP paint sprayer that is manufactured by Wagner is the Flexio 890. This one also has a stationary body which means that the weight stays and the ground and you only have to carry a lightweight spray gun while working.

If you compare it to the previous Wagner sprayer, then this only comes with an 11ft. hose while the other one (Wagner Spraytech 0518080) comes with a 20ft. hose. But, this one can be used for almost everything. I have used it for cabinets, walls, furniture, etc and it gave me great results, especially with lacquer paint.

What makes this sprayer special is that it comes with two spray nozzles. The detail and the iSpray nozzle. I use the detail nozzle when I want to give the surface a fine finish, and the iSpray nozzle for larger projects.

It has a feature called “X-BOOST” which helps you adjust the pressure and material flow, just like the other sprayers listed here.

On the downside, this sprayer is mostly made to be used outside and not indoors.

What We Liked:

  • Stationary – The weight of the sprayer stays at the ground.
  • Two Nozzles – iSpray nozzle and detail nozzle.
  • X-BOOST – This allows you to adjust the material flow and pressure.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not recommended for indoors.

4. PaintWIZ PW25150 – Best Lacquer Sprayers

Best Features  Fuji Spray PaintWIZ PW25150 Handheld Disinfectant/Paint Sprayer PRO, Blue

  • Budget Pick
  • Handheld
  • Lightweight

More detailed review ↴

Since all of the sprayers that we listed here come with a paint hose, we decided to add a handheld sprayer.

This PaintWiz handheld sprayer is great because it’s all-in-one, you don’t need a compressor or anything else to spray. You just have to fill the paint and start spraying.

This sprayer isn’t very good when it comes to thick paint such as latex (unless you thin it first), but for lacquer paint, it is very good. Especially with the help of the 400W motor power.

It’s small and lightweight, it weighs 4.2 pounds without the paint. Since it’s a handheld sprayer you can easily maneuver around without making a huge mess. If you are planning to spray indoors then I suggest buying this one.

This is a budget pick too, it costs less than the others here, so you don’t have to break the bank to buy it.

On the downside, this is only for homeowners and DIY projects, it isn’t recommended for professional use.

What We Liked:

  • Budget Pick
  • All-in-one – You don’t need a compressor to spray. Just fill the paint and start.
  • Powerful– Features a 400W motor.
  • Lightweight – It weighs 4.2 pounds.
  • Spray patterns – Horizontal, Vertical, and Round.

What Could Be Better:

  • Not recommended for professional use.

5. Fuji 2203G Semi-PRO 2 – Best Paint Sprayers for Lacquer

Best Features  Fuji Spray 2203G Semi-PRO 2 - Gravity HVLP Spray System

  • Professional
  • 25ft Hose
  • 1400 W

More detailed review ↴

As always, we like to include a professional sprayer in our lists. When it comes to lacquer paint, a professional sprayer like the FUJI 2203G can do wonders.

This sprayer turbine is one of the best HVLP paint sprayers for lacquer. What makes this sprayer special is that you get a professional finish without having to pay a huge amount of money for it.

This is a stationary sprayer, which means that the weight of the paint and motor is on the ground. You only have to carry the spray gun.

It comes with a unique spray gun. The spray gun can be converted from a bottom-feed sprayer to a gravity-feed sprayer and vice versa.

This sprayer is powerful too, it has a powerful motor that can produce 1400W which means that except for lacquer paint, you can also spray thicker paints.

On the downside, this sprayer costs more than the sprayers listed here. But less than the professional sprayers that are available on the market.

What We Liked:

  • Professional – You will get a professional finish but you will be paying less
  • Hose – It comes with a 25ft hose.
  • Powerful – 1400W of power.
  • Converted Spray Guns – The spray gun can be converted from gravity-feed to bottom-feed and vice versa

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Price – It costs more than the sprayers listed here

Best Paint Sprayers for Lacquer – Buyers Guide

Not every sprayer works with lacquer, we found this in a hard way. Spending a lot of money on a spray gun that can’t deal with lacquer is just a waste of money.

To prevent this, always make sure to check if the sprayer is compatible with lacquer or not.

Lacquer paint is always a good idea. You can use it for furniture, cabinets, and almost everything. In order to use lacquer paint, you need a paint sprayer. If you want to know what are the best paint sprayers for lacquer paint then make sure to check our website.

Before buying a lacquer sprayer you need to know what you are looking for, there are a lot of models that come with unique features, so choosing one can be hard. Instead of choosing a sprayer with a lot of features, focus on choosing a sprayer that has the features that you need.

If you don’t know what features a spray gun needs for lacquer then don’t worry, here are the things that you need to focus on when buying a lacquer paint sprayer.

Sprayer Type

When dealing with lacquer paint I recommend staying away from airless paint sprayers. They do an OK job so if you have one then don’t worry, but other sprayer types give you better results.

Airless paint sprayers make a huge mess, especially with lacquer paint and that’s the reason why I don’t like them.

The best lacquer sprayers are the HVLP’s. or sprayers that have the same technology ( a.k.a LVLP sprayers.

They don’t make a huge mess and they deliver a smooth finish.  To make it even better, we recommend aiming for cordless paint sprayers, they are easy to move with, you can reach corners easier and they don’t weigh a lot.

However, if you want a professional finish then you should stick with corded paint sprayers.

Price

I recommend spending more money on a lacquer paint sprayer than you would on a normal paint sprayer. The reason for this is because you need a sprayer that has better precision and has more adjustments.

If you are not smart about your budget then you can end up with a low-quality spray gun or with an overpriced one.

Make sure to find different models that have the same features and compare the price, that will help you to avoid paying more than necessary.

Tip Size

Tips are essential when using a paint sprayer, especially if you will use different lacquer applications. Different paints require different spraying tips.

If you are using thick paint then you need a large paint tip, and if you are using a thin material then you need a smaller tip.

The size of the tips also depends on the paint sprayer type. Airless paint sprayers need a smaller tip because of their power, and HVLP paint sprayers need a larger tip for the same paint type.

Lacquer is part of the thin paints, so you don’t need a very large spray tip. If you have an airless paint sprayer then a 1.3mm tip will do, and if you have an HVLP one the 1.5mm tip will do.

Most of the sprayers come with their paint tips (usually 3 different ones), so if you don’t want to pay extra money for paint tips then make sure to find a sprayer that includes painting tips on the package with the same price.

Different Types of Lacquer Spray Guns

There are many different types of lacquer sprayers. But, the best ones are the HVLP, LVLP, and the Airless.  These types of sprayers offer the highest pressure, the higher the pressure the better for lacquer paint. The pressure helps the sprayer to pass the lacquer paint through the gun. Having a wide nozzle is recommended too.

HVLP Lacquer Sprayers

Usually, these types of sprayers don’t offer a lot of pressure. But, they come with a large nozzle that can be adjusted and that’s helpful. They can spray lacquer paint, but you might have to thin it before.

Airless Lacquer Sprayers

These types of sprayers are the best for lacquer paint. They have a high pressure that can be adjusted and have enough power to deal with lacquer. They compress the paint instead of using air, and that’s why they provide a finish without bubbles. But, airless paint sprayers cost more than HVLP.

LVLP Lacquer Sprayers

To use an LVLP spray gun you need to have an air compressor. The air compressor gives the sprayer enough pressure to deal with lacquer paint. But, they are not recommended for large projects..

Frequently Asked Questions About Lacquer Sprayers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about lacquer sprayers

Why Do You Need a Spray Gun for Lacquer?

The old days that painters used paint rollers are gone. Don’t get me wrong, paint rollers are still good, but I prefer spraying lacquer with a paint sprayer. The spray guns are a lot of times faster than brushes.

The finish quality is better and smoother, plus you will make less mess. The only thing that paintbrushes are better is is the price, they usually cost 10 x less than a spray gun.

But, if you are working with lacquer paint then you need to get good results, and only spray guns can give you that. Furthermore, spray guns are all-in-one. If you are a painter then you need a spray gun, you can use the same sprayer for refinishing, coating, and priming.

Plus, if you decide to add multi lacquer coatings, then a spray gun is the easier way to do that.

What Fluid Set Should when Spraying Lacquer?

The fluid set depends on the paint type you will be using –

Fluid Set 4:  This fluid set is perfect when dealing with paints such as – lacquer, stains, varnishes, primers, urethane, etc.
Fluid Set 3: This fluid set is mostly used for – stains, lacquers, epoxies, varnish.
Fluid Set 2:  And this fluid set is good for non-wiping stains and auto finishes.

As you can see, when it comes to lacquer paint you can use fluid set number 3 or number 4. I prefer to use number 4, but you can make your own tests and see which one gives you better results. I don’t recommend using set 2 because it will give you bad results.

How Often Should I Clean the Air Filter?

Cleaning the air filter is important, if you are using the paint sprayers then I suggest cleaning it twice a week (At least that’s what I do).

If you have an HVLP paint sprayer then having a clean air filter is good because it gives the tool a better airflow and therefore it atomizes the material better and cools down the motor faster.

Having a clean air filter also gives you a better lacquer finish.

Final Words

When buying a spray gun for a specific paint type you need to check first if the spray gun has enough power to spray that paint or not.

Always make sure to check reviews or even pick up the phone and call the manufacturer and ask them. I found it the hard way that not every spray gun can deal with every paint type.

Also, just because a sprayer can spray lacquer paint it doesn’t mean that it will last, and that’s why we made the list of the best spray guns for lacquer paint, to help you to avoid buying a low-quality spray gun.

As always, if you don’t know which sprayer to buy then I suggest you read the buyer’s guide we wrote.
