What Are Sprayers for Staining Fences?

Most of the houses have fences today. Fences protect you, and at the same time make your home look better. But, did you know there’s a way to make fences look even better? You can do that by spraying.

You can use a spray gun or a paint sprayer to spray a fence. These types of tools give you the best finish quality and make the fences look good.  Fence sprayers are faster than paintbrushes, and they deliver a better finish.

Most people hire contracts, but you can do the same process by yourself and spend less money.

What Are the Different Types of Sprayers for Fences?

There are three different tools that you can use for staining fences: paint roller, paint sprayer, and pump sprayer. All of these are good, but they deliver different results.

Pump Sprayers

If you need to spray the fences fast then you can use a pump sprayer. This type of sprayer is very fast but not efficient enough.

The pump sprayer doesn’t get the stain through the pores. You may need to use a brush after you are done with the pump sprayer. But, if you just want to spray the fences fast then you can use a pump sprayer.

Airless Paint Sprayers

I recommend airless paint sprayers because they can spray without the use of compressed air. Because of that, these types of sprayers are very fast, but they tend to over-spray objects a lot, so you need to be careful.  They are mostly used for large projects and for thick paint. Click here to see more reviews for this type of sprayer.

There are many different types of airless paint sprayers too, you can get a handheld paint sprayer, cordless, corded, etc.

HVLP Sprayers

HVLP paint sprayers use air to push the paint out. This makes them slower than the airless ones, but you can use the HVLP’s if you are looking for detailed and finer finish quality.

They usually don’t over-spray and they are mostly used for small projects. Moreover, they are not good when it comes to thick paints such as latex or lacquer. But, they cost less (most of the time).

1. Graco Magnum 262800 – Best Paint Sprayer for Fences

Best Features

  • Perfect For Fences
  • Powerful
  • Fast

More detailed review ↴

The first pick in our best paint sprayer for fences is an airless paint sprayer.  I have used the Graco Magnum 262800 for small, medium, and large projects.  It does a great job for larger projects, but it’s not worth it for small projects.  I’d recommend it only if you are to stain all the fences around your garden.

Like most of the paint sprayers, this one too allows you to adjust the paint flow and the pressure. That’s the reason why I use this one for different-sized projects I can just adjust the paint flow if I’m dealing with a small surface.

The 1/2 HP Universal motor can reach up to 3000 PSI — this is more than enough pressure to deal with almost every kind of fence and also allows you to spray paint without having to thin it.

It features a 75ft. paint hose which can be very helpful, especially when dealing with fences because you can move around more easier, plus you can spray directly from the paint bucket which means that you don’t have to move the paint bucket a lot. But, you can easily trip on the hose, so be careful with that!

The Granco claims that it can spray up to 0.27 gal/min. We tested it, and we couldn’t reach that speed. That could be because our fences are shorter or we are not fast enough. But, when spraying fences you don’t need that kind of speed anyways.

What We Liked:

  • Powerful – Features a 1/2 HP universal motor that can deliver up to 3000 PSI.
  • Adjustable – You can control the pressure and the paint flow.
  • Easy to use – Made for homeowners, and DIYers.
  • It can spray unthinned paint.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • You can easily trip on the 75ft. hose.

2. Wagner Spraytech 0518080 – Best Sprayer for Fence Stain

Best Features  Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max HVLP Paint or Stain Sprayer, Complete Adjustability for...

  • Two-stage Motor
  • Two Paint Cups
  • Adjustable Pressure

More detailed review ↴

The next sprayer for stains on our list is an HVLP one. This means that it uses less pressure but it provides a high volume of paint. This helps you to get a smooth and detailed finish.

The Wagner Spraytech 0518080 can be used for almost every woodworking project and more, but I mostly use it for fences. It comes with a very powerful 2-stage motor that has enough power to spray un-thinned paint such as latex, but it can be also used for thinner paints.

What I like most about this sprayer is that it comes with two paint cups. If I’m dealing with a smaller project then I will grab the small paint metal cup and fill it with less paint, and if I’m dealing with a larger project then I use the large paint cup (1-1/2 quart).

The biggest problem with HVLP paint sprayers is over-spraying. To fix this, this manufacturer allows us to adjust the pressure. This doesn’t help a lot, you still have to be careful, but still, it’s a good thing they are working to fix it.

On the downside, after you turn on this sprayer it always blows air, while that doesn’t affect the performance, it still can be disturbing for most people.

What We Liked:

  • HVLP System – Uses less pressure but it provides a higher volume of paint.
  • Adjustable Pressure – You can control the pressure from 1.50 to 2.63 PSI.
  • Two Paint Cups –  A small one and a large one.
  • Powerful – Two-stage motor that can spray un-thinned paint.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • The sprayer always blows air and then turned on.

3. Goplus Paint Sprayer – Best Fence Stain Sprayer

Best Features  Goplus Paint Sprayer, 650W High Power Electric Spray Gun W/Hose, 3 Spray Patterns, 1000ml Large...

  • Budget-Friendly
  • 3 Spray Settings
  • Lightweight

More detailed review ↴

Although this isn’t the most comfortable sprayer we have used, it was still worth it to include it on this list, especially for its price. It doesn’t cost as much as the other sprayers here but still has enough power to deal with un-thinned paint.

The Goplus Paint Sprayer comes with three different spray patterns – horizontal, vertical, and circular. Depending on your project, you can use one or the other.

What I like most about this sprayer is the design, on the bottom it comes with legs that allow you to roll the paint sprayer, and if you can’t roll it, then you can use the carrying strap to put the sprayer on your shoulder and move it. The sprayer approximately weighs 8 pounds so it’s not a big deal (at least for me).

Overall a great fence paint sprayer especially for its price, but comes with some drawbacks. For example,  it is recommended to use this unit only for small, and medium projects. But, as long as you will be using it for fences then you will be fine.

What We Liked:

  • Budget-Friendly  – It doesn’t cost a lot of money.
  • Fast – It can spray up to 160sq.ft for 10 minutes.
  • 3 Spray Settings – Horizontal, vertical, and circular.
  • Design: Comes with footprints that help you to move the sprayer around.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not recommended for large projects.

4. HomeRight C800971 – Best Sprayer for Stain

Best Features

  • Easy To Use
  • Adjustable Settings
  • Three Spray Tips

More detailed review ↴

A stain sprayer that I use a lot for woodworking and home projects is the HomeRight C800971. I use this unit every day and it never fails to amaze me.  It is made for homeowners and DIYers which means that it’s very easy to use.

The HomeRight C800971 is an adjustable sprayer too. On the sides of the paint sprayer, it has two volume knobs that you can use to adjust the paint volume.  The knobs are located at the sides to help you work with one hand, and adjust the sprayer with the other hand.

It has two adjustable air caps that allow you to spray vertically, horizontally, or roundly. It comes with three different spraying tips that are categorized with colors. The red, green, and blue tips.

What makes this sprayer for stain special is that even though it’s mostly made for homeowners, it still gives you professional finishes. It comes with a powerful motor that can spray un-thinned paint.

On the downside, changing tips is easy, but it takes a lot of time. You have to remove the air cap and un-lock the spraying tips with a little wrench, and then lock it again with the same wrench.

What We Liked:

  • Easy to Use – It’s made for home-owners and DIYers
  • Adjustable – You can control the paint flow plus it has adjustable air caps.
  • Three Spray Tips – 4.00mm, 2.0mm, and 1.5mm.
  • Powerful – It can spray un-thinned paint such as latex and chalk paint.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Changing the spray tips takes a lot of time

Best Features  Fuji Spray 2203G Semi-PRO 2-Gravity HVLP Spray System, Blue

  • Professional
  • Perfect Finish Quality
  • Durable

More detailed review ↴

As always, we like to include a professional paint sprayer for people that have more experience. Although Fuji 2203G is a semi-pro spray gun, it is still easy to master, but it still takes more time than the others listed here.

The Fuji 2203G can be disassembled and reassembled very easily, this helps you to clean the sprayer faster. It has a non-bleed feature which means that the paint won’t spill from the spray gun. It has an adjustable pattern that allows you to change the size from small circular to wide.

This fence paint sprayer is very powerful, you can spray un-thinned paint and stains without any problems. Plus, you can spray directly from the can, so that helps even more.

Overall a great paint sprayer. If you compare it to the others here, this one gives you the best finish quality and it’s the most durable one. The only problem is that it will take you longer to learn how to use it.

What We Liked:

  • Professional  – It’s used for professional tasks and it gives you a professional finish quality.
  • Easy to Clean – It can be disassembled very easily.
  • Powerful – It can spray un-thinned paint directly from the can.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Usage –  It will take you longer to learn how to use it.

What To Look For in a Sprayer for Staining Fences

Speed

Time is the most valuable thing in our lives. And using brushes takes a lot of time. Usually, a fence paint sprayer is 10 to 20 times faster than a paint roller. Using a fence sprayer will save you a lot of time.

You will be able to spray your fences in a few hours instead of a few days.  Plus once you are done, you can clean the mess that a paint sprayer made much faster.

You usually only have to clean the paint sprayer and you are ready to do it. Quality Finish

Not only sprayers for stains are faster, but the finish quality is better. If you use a paint roller then most likely you will leave a lot of brush makes on the fences, even if you are using paintbrushes for a long time.

On the other hand, the chances of having paint marks on the fences while using paint sprayers are low because the paint is applied evenly. On top of that, most professionals and contractors use paint sprayers for staining a fence.

Maneuverability

If you use a paint roller then you will get tired a lot of times faster because you will have to move a lot. You will have to move the bucket of paint and the paint roller every 5 minutes.

But, if you use a stain sprayer you won’t have to move as much. Most of these paint sprayers come with a very long paint hose so you have no reason to move a lot. Always check the hose length before buying a spray gun for staining the fence.
