How Do Gravity Feed Spray Guns Work?

The name explains itself, these spray guns use gravity to work. They allow the paint to flow from the top of the sprayer to the bottom, and then once the paint reaches the bottom it meets with a pressure air (that’s created by a compressor) and it sprays the paint through the nozzle.  This process is called atomization.

Gravity-feed spray guns are hard to work with. You have to check a lot of things at the same time. For example– the thicker the paint is, the higher the pressure should be to create a smooth finish.

When it comes to spray guns, FUJI is a known brand around the industry. It produces high-quality tools that deliver what you exactly want. There’s no exception with the 5175G.

The 5175G comes with adjustable knobs that allow you to adjust the size of the fan, from small to large, and everything else in between.

What makes this sprayer special is that it’s made from steel. It has stainless steel components, stainless springs, and knobs made from metal. This makes this feed gun very durable and lighter. The 5175G only weighs 1.95 pounds.

This is a non-bleed sprayer, which means that it minimizes the bleed of air and paint, helping you save a lot of paint and also deliver smooth and clean paint.

However, this sprayer comes with some downsides. It’s a professional sprayer which means that it is harder to use, if you are a homeowner with no experience then you should be ready to spend some hours learning how to use it. Since this is a professional sprayer that means that it will cost more than the others.

What We Liked:

  • Adjustable – You can adjust the size of the fan
  • 3 Air Caps – The 1.3mm air cap is installed.
  • Non-Drip – It doesn’t bleed air or paint.
  • Durable – It’s made of steel.

When it comes to the manufacturer the DeVilbiss isn’t a known company and I don’t use their products a lot, but when it comes to this model (802342) they did a pretty good job.

This gravity feed spray gun uses an HVLP system and not an LVLP like we are used to seeing with small spray guns. This means that this sprayer uses less pressure but it delivers more paint.

I like this gravity feed spray gun because it’s very good for detailing jobs, if you are a homeowner and want to do some home painting projects then you will love this one.

It weighs 5 pounds which is more than our first pick, but still, it is considered lightweight if you compare it to the others.

Another good reason why I listed this as number two is the finish quality, it delivered a very smooth and clean finish which is very needed for detailed projects.

On the downside, although the design is pretty strong it seems that it will wear and tear if not careful. The sprayer is also made for homeowners and DIYers to be used every now and then, if you need to use the sprayer every day then this one isn’t for you.

What We Liked:

  • HVLP – Uses less pressure but delivers more paint.
  • Finish Quality – Delivers a smooth finish quality.
  • Lightweight – Weighs 5 pounds.
  • 3 Spray Tips – 1.0mm, 1.3mm, 1.8mm.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not made for professional use.

Another great gravity feed spray gun that can be used by hobbyists, but not limited to, is the Ingersoll 200G.

This sprayer comes with a side pattern control knob that allows you to adjust the airflow, it also has a very precise air regulator with a gauge that helps you control the airflow. You can also adjust the spray pattern to match it with the objects you are spraying.

Just like most of the gravity feed spray guns, this one too comes with non-bleed paint cups. This prevents cups to bleed paint or air and helps you save a lot of paint during the process. It also helps you maneuver easier without risking paint spilling.

Overall a great sprayer, it doesn’t cost as much as our first two picks and it provides a very good finish quality, the sprayer is also lightweight, it weighs only 2 pounds. It comes with a cup size of 600cc.

On the downside, this sprayer seems to clog very easily, you will have to clean it very often to avoid that.

What We Liked:

  • Adjustable Knobs – Allows you to adjust airflow.
  • Non-Bleed Paint Cup – Doesn’t bleed the paint or air.
  • Air Regulator Gauge – It allows you to control the air.
  • Lightweight – Weighs 2 pounds.
  • Adjustable spray patterns

  • It can easily get clogged

If you are looking for a high-quality gravity feed spray gun that doesn’t cost too much then you should check the Neiko 31216A. The Neiko is a known brand for cheap high-quality tools.

This one uses HVLP technology too, which means that it uses less pressure to spray more paint. But, it also means that you can easily overspray using it.

What I like most about this sprayer is that it’s durable, the body is made from steel, it has stainless steel nozzles that are rust-resistant, and it has an aluminum cup.  This gives the tool a longer life and also makes it lightweight, it only weighs 2.8 pounds.

It comes with three different adjustable valve knobs that help you to be more precise, and a 2.0mm color-coded nozzles that can be used for almost every type of paint such as primers, automotive, etc.

On the downside, it doesn’t come with an air pressure hose, you need to buy one to attach it to the air compressor.

  • Durable – Made from steel and it’s rust-resistant.
  • Lightweight – The sprayer only weighs 2.8 pounds

More detailed review ↴

As always we like to include a professional sprayer on our list. So, if you are looking for a professional gravity feed spray gun then you need to check the FUJI 2203G.

As you can see, this is a different sprayer than the others listed here. This is a stationary paint sprayer which means that the weight of the motor stays and the ground and you only have to carry the spray gun.

The turbine comes with a powerful 1400W two-stage motor which is more than enough for every painting project. The turbine case is connected with the gravity feed spray gun with a 25ft paint hose that helps you to move around easier.

What makes this one special is the spray gun. You can transform the spray gun from a gravity feed sprayer to a bottom feed spray gun and vice versa. The gravity feed sprayer has a 400cc paint cup and a standard 1.3mm nozzle installed.

On the downside, the sprayer is louder than expected and it takes more space than a normal gravity feed spray gun.

What We Liked:

  • Professional – It can be used for professional projects.
  • Powerful – It features a 1400W two-stage motor.
  • Stationary – The turbine stays on the ground you only have to carry the spray gun.
  • Hose – It features a 25ft long paint hose.

Best Gravity Feed Paint Sprayers – Buyers Guide

I get it – there are a lot of reasons why you are still thinking if you should buy a gravity feed spray gun or not.  One of the biggest problems that beginners face with a gravity spray gun is the pressure.

Working with air pressure is hard, especially if you never have done it before. There are a lot of numbers involved, and if you don’t know what these numbers mean then it becomes even harder. You will be reliving the math class all over again.

Except for the pressure, there is paint – you will be in control with your hands and you will aim not knowing if you are precise or not.

The chances of you screwing up are very high. And if you screw up the paint of your living room then you won’t be happy.

So, after these difficulties, it’s understandable that you want to go through and learn how to get better and how to choose the best gravity feed paint sprayer. Let us help you with that.

Pressure

As we mentioned it before, one of the most important thing when it comes to gravity feed spray gun is the pressure. Maintaining consistent pressure means that you will get a good finish.

If the pressure drops several times while spraying then the paint will be uneven. That’s why it is important to know how to use pressure.

To make this easier for you, you need to buy a gravity feed gun that delivers steady air pressure. Having a low-quality spray gun that can’t deliver pressure good then you will get uneven paint, no matter how good you maintain the air pressure.

Also, if you have a compressor before buying a spray gun, make sure that the spray gun is compatible with the pressure you have and if the spray gun has enough power to push the amount of paint you need.

Trigger

A gravity feed spray that comes with a trigger will help you a lot, especially with the pressure. Basically, the trigger adjusts the material output.

Different gravity feed spray guns come with different triggers. There are knobs which means that you can rotate the knob to high or low to determine how much material flow you want, and there are triggers.

The triggers work in a different way, basically, the more you pull out the trigger the more paint will come out. In comparison, these two work great, but a lot of people prefer the trigger before the knobs. Personal choice I guess.

Paint Cup

A lot of people don’t realize that paint cup capacity is very important, and it can make or break a project. Having a large gravity cup means that you will be able to carry more paint and you don’t have to re-fill the paint very often.

I usually make a huge mess when I want to re-fill the paint so having to do it less is a win for me.

But, large paint cups also mean that you will be carrying more weight. Except for the spray gun weight, you will have to carry the weight of the paint, and depending on how big the paint cup the weight can be too much.

Having a heavy gravity feed spray gun means that you will get fatigue hands faster and therefore you will have to rest often. Also, tired hands can lead to over-spraying and low-quality finishes.

Having a small paint cup means that the gravity feed spray gun is lighter and you will be able to work longer without having the need to rest.

But, you will have to re-fill the paint often which can become frustrating. I suggest to buy a gravity feed spray gun with a large paint cup but only fill half of it. Therefore you will be able to work longer without fatigue, but you also don’t need to re-fill every 5 mins.

If you are doing DIY projects then you don’t have to worry about the paint cup size. You should worry more if the paint cup is easy to clean or not.

Comfort

Having a comfortable gravity feed spray gun is also important. It can help you to work longer without having to stop. Working long hours with a rough spray gun can be bad for your hands, and that’s why you need a comfortable paint gun.

But, just be reading online reviews you can’t know if your hands will fit on the sprayer or not. It’s best to go to a local shop and see what dimensions fit your hands and what don’t and try to find a sprayer with the same size.

Price

Whenever people like to talk about it or not, price is a very big factor when it comes to buying something. A paint sprayer is a tool that can help you complete a lot of painting projects and make your house look better, so you don’t want to spend less money and get a low-quality sprayer.

But, you also don’t want to overpay for something.

That’s why it is important to know your budget before buying one, once you know your budget you can go find sprayers that fit your price and compare the features.

If you have accessories or something that can help with the sprayer then make sure to find a sprayer that is compatible with them.

Atomization

The main difference between the normal spray gun and gravity feed spray guns is atomization. This has to do a lot with the design of the sprayer.

As you know, atomization is the mix of the paint and the air once the paint is at the nozzle of the sprayer.

The difference is that the paint of gravity feed spray guns comes from the head of the sprayer and the paint of conventional feed sprayers comes from the bottom.
