More detailed review ↴

If you are planning to use a paint sprayer for deck fences then you need the best one. Although there are a lot of units that do a good job for deck painting, the Graco Magnum X7, in my opinion, is the best paint sprayer for deck stain.

This sprayer comes with a powerful 5/8 HP motor that can deliver up to 3000 PSI, it also features a stainless steel pistol that gives the sprayer even more power to spray un-thinned paint at very high pressure. It can spray up to 0.31/gallons per minute.

What I like most about this sprayer is that you can spray directly from the paint buckets. You don’t have to fill or thin the paint, you just put the tube on the paint gallon and start spraying (1 or 5-gallon buckets only).

It supports 100ft hose, so if you have to move around a lot you can attach the hose and start moving around your backyard without having to move the base of the sprayer with you.

Except for these, you can adjust the pressure and the material flow rate plus it has a TrueAirless spray tip that reduces the overspray.

On the downside, the sprayer is heavy – it weighs 23 lbs. But, it comes with wheels and a handle, plus the hose helps too.

Pros:

  • Powerful – Features a 5/8 HP motor that delivers up to 3000 PSI.
  • Fast – It can spray up to 0.31 gallons per minute.
  • Steel Pistol – Gives the sprayer enough power to spray un-thinned paint.
  • Hose– Supports up to 100ft hose.
  • Easy to Clean – Comes with a power flush adapter that connects to the garden hose to make the cleaning process faster.

Cons:

  • Heavy – Weighs 23 lbs.

If you are a beginner and never used a paint sprayer before then this HomeRight C800971 will do wonders for you.

This unit is made for homeowners – that means that it’s very easy to use and set up. It comes with great design and settings that will help you make your decks look good.

But, even though the sprayer is made for homeowners, it still gives the surface a smooth and professional finish. Also, it has a lot of power, it comes with 450W of power that helps this unit to spray un-thinned paint such as latex.

This HomeRight spray is adjustable, you can adjust the material flow, and you can adjust the air cap to horizontal, vertical, and round. Moreover, it comes with three different spraying tips (1.5mm, 2.0mm, and 4.0mm) that are used to help the sprayer to spray different kinds of paint. Once you are done with the spraying you can easily clean this sprayer because it comes with cleaning brushes.

On the downside, this is a handheld paint sprayer so you will have to hold the whole sprayer including the paint the whole time.

A sprayer that I use a lot, especially when I have to spray decks it’s the Wagner 0518080.

What I like most about this unit is that it’s a stationary paint sprayer, which means the weight stays at the ground and I only have to carry the weight of the spray gun.

The spray gun has a 1 qt. paint capacity and it’s connected with the base through a 20ft hose. The hose allows you to move freely around the workspace without having to move the base.

Wagner 0518080 comes with a powerful two-stage motor that can deal with materials such as latex or stains. The sprayer is adjustable too, you can change the material flow and you can also adjust the spray patterns from 1/2″ to 12″.

On the downside, this sprayer uses an HVLP technology which is known for overspray. But, the adjustable settings help a lot to reduce that.

Pros:

  • Stationary – The whole weighs stays at the ground.
  • Spray gun – You will get a spray gun with 1 qt. paint capacity.
  • Adjustable – You can adjust the spray pattern from 1/2″ to 12″
  • Hose – It comes with a 20ft hose.

Cons:

  • HVLP – If not careful, you can overspray surfaces easily.

Another great deck paint sprayer is the Flexio 590. This sprayer is good for many projects such as spraying cabinets, furniture, decks, etc.

It comes with a powerful motor that can spray up to 8 gallons per hour. What I like most about this paint sprayer is the X-BOOST turbine, this turbine gives the sprayer enough power to deal with un-thinned paint.

Another thing that I like is the nozzles. It comes with two unique spray nozzle – the iSpray and the detail nozzle. The iSpray nozzle is ideal for larger projects and the detail nozzle is good for smaller projects.

You can adjust the speed, it comes with 10 different speed settings that you can choose from. And once you are done the cleaning process takes less than 5 minutes.

How to Stain A Deck?

Although the deck staining is easy, not everyone knows how to do it. There are a lot of ways to do this, but we always use these steps. To get the best results possible it’s recommended to use a deck stain paint sprayer.

If you are looking for the best paint sprayers for deck stain then you came to the right place. We made a list of 5 sprayers that we think will help you get the results you want. Check them out!

Before You Spray

Before you start with the spraying, you need to check the deck condition. If the deck has cracked stain then you have to remove it. If the deck is dirty or covered with mold then it’s recommended to use a pressure washer to clean the whole deck. Once you clean the deck you need to wait a day or two before moving forward to the next step.

Once the deck is dry, then you need to remove everything that’s on the deck and cover the nearby objects with plastic sheeting. This will protect the nearby objects from overspray. Prepare your deck paint sprayer and the stain material you will be using.

Spraying Stain

Once you prepare the deck for staining, it’s time to prepare the deck paint sprayer. Fill the paint cup with the stain material you will be using. It’s recommended to make a few spray tests before starting to spray. Once everything is good with the paint sprayer then you can continue to stain the deck.

You need to stay 6 to 12 inches away from the surface you are spraying. Make sure to always move your deck paint sprayers and not keep it spraying in the same area.  After you stain the whole deck then you need to wait for the stain to dry before applying another coat.  You can add a second coat using the same instructions. Usually, you will need to wait a few days before the first coat is fully dry before adding another coat.

Final Step

And this is how you stain a deck. Now all that is left is to clean up the area. Start by cleaning the paint sprayer. As you know, maintaining the paint sprayer is a very important step. This gives the tool a longer life and prevents the sprayer from clogging the next time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to clean the sprayer.

Don’t forget to remove any plastic sheeting from the nearby objects and check their condition. Once the deck dries, the only thing that is left is for you to enjoy your hard work. Optionally, you can also add exterior paint to the decks.

Best Paint Sprayers For Deck Stain – Buyers Guide

Buying a deck sprayer isn’t easy. There are a lot of models available, so just choosing one can be hard. Even with our best sprayers for deck stain list, choosing just one can be difficult. That’s why we have decided to list the features you need to look into before buying a deck sprayer.

The best deck sprayer is the one that gives you the results you want. Depending on the size of your deck you might want a small or big paint sprayer. Make sure that the sprayer you buy has adjustable settings because you can use the same sprayer for different projects.

Brand

As I said before, there are a lot of different sprayers on the market. You can get some of them for a very low price, but how long will they last? If you decide to invest in a paint sprayer then I recommend going for a brand that is known for high-quality products. Wagner, HomeRight, Graco are just some of the most used brands.

Hose

A very important part of spraying a deck is being able to move around. If you have a large deck then you need to move a lot. Most of these paint sprayers are heavy, so moving the whole unit can be overwhelming. That’s why I recommend buying sprayers that support long hoses. Our first pick supports up to 100ft. of paint hose.

If a deck sprayer doesn’t have a hose, then make sure the sprayer doesn’t weight a lot, because you will get tired faster.

Power

The more power a deck sprayer has, the faster you will be able to complete the project. But, the more power the sprayer has. the more the price goes up. Except for the price, sprayers with a powerful motor are also known to be very heavy.  Overspraying is also a huge problem for powerful. paint sprayers. Pay attention to the PSI rating, HP, and how fast a paint sprayer is before buying it.

Adjustments

Having an adjustable deck sprayer is a very important thing. With adjustments, you can minimize the over spraying. Adjustments usually allow you to slow down the material flow or speed it up when needed. This makes the sprayer versatile and you can use it for every project, small or large.

Tips

Stains are thinner materials, so your deck sprayer needs to have a small tip size. A 0.11-0.13 tip would be perfect for stains. If your sprayer doesn’t come with these tips then you need to buy them.  This can be a deal-breaker for some because paying extra money isn’t in their best interest. If you don’t want to pay extra money for tips, then search for sprayers that include spraying tips.

Final Words

And this is it – this is the list of the best deck sprayers and the mini-guide on how to stain decks. As always, if you don’t know which one of the sprayers to pick, you should read the buyers guide. We have listed the top 6 features you need to focus on when buying a deck sprayer.
