Things To Consider Before Buying a Heat Gun For Cell Phone Repair

If you are new to heat guns or have never used a heat gun to repair your phone screen but are good with tools and want to give it a try, here are some considerations.  If you came to this page directly, start by reading my short introduction article on heat guns.  If you have watched a few YouTube videos about repairing your cell phone, make sure you read my heat gun vs. hair dryer article.

For Cell Phone and other electronics repairs, you want to buy a heat gun with the following features:

  • Temperature settings with a lower range end of 200 ℉ / 93 ℃ to 600 ℉ / 315 ℃
  • Smaller size
  • Concentrator nozzle
  • Easy to hold
  • Lightweight

While heat guns are known for their hotter temperatures, when it comes to repairing cellphones, you want relatively lower temperatures to avoid damaging the sensitive parts in your smartphone and melting any plastic pieces.  Plus, smartphone manufacturers have switched to using adhesives instead of metal screws for the many parts inside the phone, including keeping the screen attached.  Starting at 200 ℉ to 300 ℉ (93 ℃  to 148 ℃), most of the adhesives and glues start to loosen without losing their sticky properties (also known as becoming pliable).  Therefore, you want a heat gun that has this lower temperature range but that can also go higher for the most stubborn adhesives.

I prefer smaller size heat guns with preset temperatures and a nozzle guard to avoid finger burns when working in the tight spaces of a cell phone.  Many articles and videos will suggest holding the heat gun about 10 inches from your hand while it’s warming, and then once it starts to get too hot to keep your hand there, it’s at a good working temperature.  But why risk burning your hand and wait for the heat gun to warm up when you could be setting up your phone and organizing your replacement parts.  Therefore, using a heat gun with preset temperature options and nozzle guards is definitely helpful.

Lastly, since you most likely will be either holding the smartphone in your hand or putting it in holder or on a flat surface when using your free hand to move pieces around, I prefer heat gun models that are easy to hold, lighter weight, and have built-in stands as it will typically take several minutes of sustained heat for the screen adhesives to become pliable.  While many heat guns are shaped like hair dryers or guns for standard holding, I prefer the cylindrical-shaped models when repairing my cell phones, as I feel they allow you to be more precise and are easier to use.

As a final word, keep in mind that my list of recommended heat guns for cell phone repair can be used for many other tasks and crafts, including removing stickers and wax, embossing, drying and removing paint, and general electronics repair.

Our first choice of the best heat gun for phone repair is the “Tacklife HGP72AC “. This heat gun comes with an LCD display that shows the temperature that the heat gun is blowing at that very moment.

This is very helpful, especially while fixing your phone. You can check the temperature of the heat gun on the LCD Display, and you can change it.
Except for the temperature adjustment, this heat gun also has the memory settings feature that allows you to save up to 4 different heat and different settings that you use the next time you are working with the heat gun. That will help you save a lot of time, especially if you are working with the same object again.

Except for phone repair, I have used this heat gun for different projects– such as removing paint from walls or objects, removing stickers, thawing frozen pipes, etc, and it does a good job.

Actually, this heat gun can work over 600 hours with the max temperature without any problem [ according to the tool description, I didn’t check it to see if it can or can’t be used for 600 hours, but I’m sure it does ].

This one too comes with an over-heating protection, which means that if the parts inside heat a lot, this feature will prevent them from burning by automatically stopping the heat gun. It also comes with a cool-down mode, which helps the heat gun to cool down faster by blowing cold air instead of hot air.
Except for the heat gun, I also got with the package four different nozzles, a putty knife, and some other tools that will help you complete different tasks.

What We Liked:

  • LCD Display – You can see all the settings including the temperature on the LCD display.
  • Temperature Control – This allows you to adjust the temperature by 20-degrees.
  • Memory Settings – This allows you to save 4 different temperature & fan settings that you can use later.
  • In-build Protection – Protects the inside parts from burning.
  • Cool-down Mode – It has a cool-down mode that will blow cold air instead of hot air to cool down the tool faster.
  • Can work over 600 hours with the max temperature without any problems.

What We Didn't Like:

  • Sometimes the fan stops working.

Our second choice we have the "famous" DeWalt Heat Gun Model that is recommended by almost every blog that reviews heat guns.

The only reason why this is listed #2 in our list is that it only offers you 50-degrees F increments while the other two offer 20-degrees increments. The 50-degree F adjustment is still great, but depending on your phone model it may or may not work perfectly.

Clearly, this one too has an LCD display that displays all the settings and the heating temperature. The temperature range goes from 150 to 1100 degrees F.

It has a lightweight body that helps you to work longer without having to stop to rest, and when the resting time comes, you can hang it somewhere since it has a built-Inch hang ring.

This one just like the other two heat guns in my list comes with in-built protection which basically helps the tool to have a longer life and prevents burn up by automatically shutting down the heat gun.

Except for phone repairing, this one can be used for different tasks as well. It comes with innovative kickstand support that allows you to put the heat gun at its back and use both hands while working.

What We Liked:

  • LCD Display – You can see the heating temperature at the LCD Display
  • Lightweight Body – Helps you work longer without having to stop.
  • In-build Protection – Prevent the tool from burn up by automatically shutting it down.

What We Didn't Like:

  • Temperature Control – it offers 50-degree temperature adjustment. Still great but the other two picks offer 20-degrees adjustment.

As I said before, you need an LCD display in order to see how much temperature you are blowing to your phone. You don't want to blow too high or too low, that may break other parts of your phone or not work at all. So, that's why this "TR Industrial 1700W Digital Heat Gun Kit" works perfectly for your screen replace task.

What I like most about this heat gun is that it has 20-degree adjustments. So you can start your heat gun at the lowest temperature which is 120 degrees F and using the buttons near the LCD display you can increase or decrease the temperature by 20-degrees.

Extremely helpful especially for cell phone screen replacement or any other sensitive object. You can even choose from 5 different fan speeds. All of these settings are shown in the LCD display which is located at the back of the heat gun.

And if you found the right temperature which makes the screen take-off faster and better then you can save that setting. Yes, you read it right, you can save it. I was surprised just like you maybe are right now when I saw that this heat gun has this feature.

This feature is called the "Easy Access Memory Settings" which basically allows you to save up to 4 different heating and fan settings that you can use the next time when you start the heat gun.

It comes with Built-in overheating protection which most of the basic heat guns don't have. What is feature basically does is that if somehow the parts inside the heat gun get heated to a point that they may get damaged then this feature kicks in and stop the heat gun automatically.

This will protect the heat gun and allow it to have a longer life. Most of the heat guns that don't have this feature tend to have a much shorter life.

Why is listed this model on the list of the best heat gun for phone screen replacement is that it can be used for different tasks as well. It perfectly helps you replace the phone screen but it also can be used to remove paint, different automotive work, etc.

What We Liked:

  • LCD Display – Shows you the exact temperature and all the other settings in real-time.
  • Temperature Control – This allows you to adjust the temperature by 20-degrees by only using buttons near the LCD Display. Extremely helpful when it’s used to replace screen phones.
  • Easy Access Memory Settings – You can save up to 4 different fan speed and temperature settings and use them later.
  • Built-in Overheating protection – Protects the parts inside from overheating.

What We Didn't Like:

  • Sometimes, to save one memory settings you have to turn off and turn on the tool again

First of all, I want to start by explaining what are heat guns? Heat guns are just like hair driers. If you ever used or saw a hair driers then understanding this is easy.
